📖 Part 1 — GH Patterns in English

Why does "gh" make so many different sounds? Let's learn them all!

🤔 What is GH?

In English, the letters GH can be: completely silent, sound like the letter F, or (rarely) sound like G. There is no simple rule — you must memorize the words!

🔇 1. GH = Silent

Rule

When GH comes after a vowel, it is usually silent. You do NOT say "gh".

💡 GH = Silent
light
/laɪt/
Turn on the light, please.
🌙 GH = Silent
night
/naɪt/
Good night, sleep well!
GH = Silent
right
/raɪt/
Turn right at the corner.
👩‍👧 GH = Silent
daughter
/ˈdɔːtər/
My daughter is 10 years old.
💭 GH = Silent
thought
/θɔːt/
I thought it was here.
🛒 GH = Silent
bought
/bɔːt/
I bought a new bag.
👄
-ight
Open mouth, say "eye" + close with "t"
👄
-ough/-ought
Round lips, say "aw" sound
👄
-aught
Like "aw" — daughter = "daw-ter"
Don't try to pronounce GH after vowels. Just skip it! light = l-eye-t (not "lighgt")

📢 2. GH = /f/ Sound

Rule

Sometimes GH sounds like the letter F. This happens especially at the END of words. Bite your lower lip lightly and blow air — that's the /f/ sound!

😂 GH = /f/
laugh
/læf/
He makes me laugh every day.
🙆 GH = /f/
enough
/ɪˈnʌf/
Is this enough water?
🌊 GH = /f/
rough
/rʌf/
The sea is very rough today.
💪 GH = /f/
tough
/tʌf/
This meat is very tough.
🤧 GH = /f/
cough
/kɒf/
I have a bad cough.
😬
/f/ sound
Bite lower lip + blow air gently
🚫
NOT "gh"
Never say "laGH" — say "laf"

👻 3. GH = /g/ Sound (Rare!)

Rule

Very rarely, GH sounds like a regular G. This usually happens at the beginning of a word.

👻 GH = /g/
ghost
/ɡoʊst/
Do you believe in ghosts?
😱 GH = /g/
ghastly
/ˈɡæstli/
That smell is ghastly!
GH = G only at the START of words (ghost, ghastly). This is very rare in everyday English!
